The Top 10 interview questions… And how to answer them!

If you are looking for a job, you will have to go through many job interviews. Here are the most common questions, and how you should answer them in order to maximize your chances to get hired.

Question #1: What can you tell me about yourself?
Be brief. Mention some of your abilities related to the job you are trying to get. However, try not to sound like you have prepared a speech. Mention things you have already done, starting from your older jobs up to the present, emphasizing how much you have grown and learned.

Question #2: Why did you leave your former job?
Never mention problems with your former employers! Always stay positive, demonstrate gratefulness for the company you used to work for, and speak about your personal need to grow. If you are new in the city, this is a perfect reason you can mention.

Question #3: Do you consider yourself successful?
Always answer yes. And briefly explain why.

Question #4: Are you a team player?
Again, always answer yes, and have in mind a few examples of team work you have successfully participated in the past. You should be able to leave a reference of one of your colleagues just in case.

Question #5: Why do you want to work for this company?
Previously to the interview, you should do a little research, and mention some facts about the company and its goals. Thanks to Internet, this is quite simple to do! It is important that you are honest about your intentions and that you actually WANT to work for the company (you wouldn’t be applying for the job if you didn’t, right?).

Question #6: Are you applying for other jobs?
Be honest, but always try to focus your answer on your interest in this particular company.

Question #7: What kind of salary do you expect?
This is a tricky one! Never mention the number in the first place; after all, it would be silly to lose the job because of the wrong answer. Say something as “Well, that depends on the responsibilities I have to handle”. If they push you to give an actual figure, mention a range according to the job (here’s another good opportunity for previous research).

Question #8: Are you up to extra hours? / Would you be willing to work on weekends if necessary?
This is up to you. Again, be honest with your priorities. Once you commit, there’s no turning back.

Question #9: Why should we hire you?
Don’t focus on your needs, even if you are desperate for the job. On the contrary, briefly mention all the things you have to offer to the company, and how your personal strengths make you appropriate for this kind of job.

Question #10: Do you have any questions for me?
Always go to the interview with one or two questions prepared. This shows interest in the company.

Remember, a kind smile and a firm handshake, are fundamental in every job interview! Good luck!
